Arrival! Part~1

Hello lovelies!

I LIVE IN TAIWAN.

Yes I know what you’re thinking.

And no, I’m not dead.

Just settling in.

The things I’ve had to do to end up in Taiwan has turned out to be quite an adventure!

A very LONG adventure, so I decided to split it up into 2 different parts.

So, Arrival! Part 1

The flights that I took were
1 Wichita-Denver
2. Denver-San Francisco
3. San Francisco-Taipei

August 22nd of 2014 felt like a whole week.

I woke up with minimal crying!
Then left with minimal crying!

That was a bonus!
Maybe I was all teared out…

My first flight was about an hour and 20 minutes.
While I was waiting for the flight to board I sat by this nice couple, and while I was trying to find my seat, turns out I had a whole plane ride with them!

They are totally adorable, newly-weds, and Holdeman mennonites!

The whole plane ride we had a lovely talk about traveling, faith, family, and strangely enough, Canada!
It was pretty great.
They kindly showed me where in the magazine was the airport map, and the general area that my airplane was boarding.
Thank goodness for them!

It turns out that my gate was CLEAR on the other side of the airport, and I truly discovered how slow people walk that day.

When I finally got to the gate, it was 5 minutes before it was supposed to load.
But it turned out to be delayed so I freaked out for no reason at all.

*typical*

BUT I got a good spot in line, and was able to stand and catch my breath.

When we finally boarded, (at least 40 min late) I sat with a window seat, and to my right was an older man, and next to him was a girl who was born and raised in Taipei!
So THAT plane ride was also pretty social.
Turns out the guy thought that I was going to Thailand (as almost everyone does) and showed us pictures, and tons of stories of when he lived in Malaysia for 4 years, and he met and married his wife there, and so many other amazing things!
He showed me his phone wallpaper which is a rotting head that they had hanging around everywhere over there.

He was there in the 70’s and still thinks of it.

Tells you how impactful traveling can be!

But nevertheless a rotting head was a surprising choice for a background.

The young lady that was from Taipei, we ended up going off the plane together, and tried to figure out the airport together. A quick and lovely friendship.

Unfortunately our gate that we needed to be at was ALSO clear on the other side of the airport.
I’d say we walked 2 miles.

We decided to eat, and she was craving some Mexican food, and thus my last time eating Mexican food happened.

Now unfortunately I got dehydrated (Even though I drank 2 water bottles per plane ride) and I had a screeching headache, I was tired, and super hot.

But even with those components in play, I really did have a good time eating Mexican with a new friend.

Turns out she’s currently getting her Masters in Pittsburgh in ROBOTICS.

After we ate, we headed back to our gate, and then I had a fellow rotary exchange student introduce himself, and he ended up sitting beside me, and we started talking about where we’re from and where we’re going.

Another new friend!

And THEN we found another exchange student next so us, and she sat by us, and we had a mutual agreement that we are pretty awesome.

I was on a ROLL with talking with pretty cool people.

It was so easy to talk to them!

But by then I also had a stomachache and an even bigger headache than before!

By the time the plane took off I felt pretty darn awful.
I was internally moaning and wishing I could wither away.

I know I’m such a drama queen.

The last and longest plane ride was pretty awful.

I had a window seat, and I have a love-hate relationship with window seats.

I LOVE looking out the window, but we have to close them on long flights for most of the time for people to try to sleep.

So no beautiful skies to look at.

ūüė¶

And then I’m just stuck and I have to make 2 grown men pause everything and move so I can pee.

It was just a super long time to be sitting down, and every 5 hours or so I walked up and down the asiles for a couple minutes.

I watched like 4 movies, tried to sleep, failed, watched tv shows and wished I could stand up.

that was basically the last filght.

I didn’t talk with my seat neighbors or really look at them straight in the eye.

It was kind of weird.

My favorite part about the flight was the map on the back of the seat.

Loved seeing the distance that i’ve gone.

Of course I still had quite a ways to go ūüôā

Much Love

Departure

Hello Lovelies!

Tomorrow is the day.

I have Procrastinated and Procrastinated in writing a post for a very long time.

I’m sorry!

I have SO MUCH to tell you!

But for now, I am leaving tomorrow.

Today I have packed up my life, cried, hugged, and nothing seems real.

I am so emotional, and so ready, and so not ready.

This past month I have experienced everything so differently, I have felt things so much more than usual.

A sentence, a look, a pause, and I’ll start crying.

I’ve seen the extravagant love that I recieve day after day, and the support and the huge amount of caring that I’m surrounded by.

I will miss them.

I will miss them terribly.

I will miss them so much hit’s hard to breathe.

Today is emotional.

Today is another step forward to changing.

I will be posting again, and it shan’t be sparce anymore.

(Raise your hand if you still use “Shan’t” Anyone?         okay.)

I’ve just been taking in everything.

Saying goodbye, and learning how to say hello.

This is me right now.

Well this is what I’ve been trying so hard to do.

 Today I’m taking everything in.

I’m going for the change!

Monday Mumbles- A little Mentoring can really go a long way

Hello Lovelies!

I wanted to tell you all of the wonderful mentoring experience that happened a couple weeks ago.

Thankfully, I know somebody who is actually in Australia RIGHT NOW that is experiencing a lot of what I am going to be doing.

Her Foreign exchange year is coming at the end almost the same time mine is starting.

{We might be in the air at the same time it’s that close}

It’s awesome to think¬†that I’ll get to know a lot of kids that she has too!

Lucky break huh?

I was able to talk with her mom (The sweetest person) for a while and she was MORE than willing to tell us stories and lessons that her daughter has gone through.

We talked for over 2 hours, and frankly, we could have talked a lot longer.

She told me so much I’ve gotta put these into Categories.

PLACE

  • It wasn’t until MAY that they heard anything from Australia.

That might not seem like a big deal, but the placing month is supposed to be in January. It’s good to know that the 5¬†months felt as long for them as it is for us.

  • Most likely going to reside in Townsville, definitely going to be in Queensland, but nothing is definite

SCHOOLING

  • The School district is most of Queensland and then goes off in the Northern Territory. It’s such a HUGE school district that there is really no way of knowing what school I’ll end up in.

Here’s a picture for perspective.

Map of Australian USD by MeanwhileJessie

I have a handful of maybes, but no “Yes you are going there”s yet

  • All of them have school uniforms, resistance is futile. Some of the schools have hats, and some even have a no makeup policy.
  • Talking to teachers MUST be formal, and please and thank you’s are also a necessity
  • But cussing is no big deal, and done right in front¬†teachers.¬†

A HUGE change from public school here (good ‘ole Kansas)

PERSONAL GROWTH

I’m not really going to go into detail on this because who am I to blab to the Internet about¬†this?

  • But there will be very low times, and there will ¬†be very high times.

I will definitely come back as a different person.

  • I will also NOT GET ALONG WITH EVERY HOST FAMILY.

It’s impossible to click with every host family.

This one took a while to sink in.

I’m a big people pleaser.

This’ll be difficult for me.

  • Learning to be self sufficient, and able to adapt to different situations will be something to learn throughout the year.

ACCENT

  • She doesn’t really have an accent, but her way of speaking is different. Slower, and more articulate.

Here and then a little TOEMAHTOE instead of TOEMAYTOE may come out.

{Don’t know if you guys know, but in Australia, their way of speaking is s-l-o-w-e-r, and some Australians believe that fast talkers have something to hide}

WORK

  • If I really wanted to make the time, I could have a job an work throughout the year if money is a big deal.

Or I could try to live it up in school and do a bunch of extra-curricular activities.

You’re only Public-schooled again once!

(or something like that)

COMMUNICATION

  • A Skype every so often, and an awesome app called ‘What’s App?’ That works internationally.¬†

“What’s App” apparently can send pictures and texts super fast, and free.

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

  • America is much more laid-back style wise, and the clothes are a lot cheaper here as well.

Australian’s (with it being hot and all) like to show a lot of skin.

  • The cost of living is a lot more expensive there, but that won’t pertain to me as much¬†{BONUS!}

It was truly wonderful, and I am SO very glad that I’m blessed enough to have a ‘mentor’ in the sense that if I have any questions that she can answer, that she’ll be more than willing to answer in a heartbeat.

Now that I know a lot more than I did a couple weeks ago, I feel so much more confident about actually pursing
(and waiting for an answer) for Australia.

Till Next time!

Much Love~

WtT- First communications should probably clear up some things. But it didn’t.

Hello lovelies!

Welcome to another Wednesday tea Talk!

(THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO POST LAST NIGHT BUT FOR SOME CRAZY REASON IT DID NOT. Just pretend it’s Wednesday ok?)

[SIDE NOTE]

I’m using my newest mug for the first time, and I LOVE IT.

As If I needed another reason to love thrift shops.

NEW TEA MUG IS TEArific. Hah.

NEW TEA MUG IS TEArific.
Hah.

Today is going to be an update on my news with Australia.

FINALLY.

When I chose Australia, I was told that they take their dear sweet time on every little thing and a half, but I didn’t know they REALLY are into taking things slow.

Like REALLY into it.

I finally heard something from them a couple weeks ago, and they said that July 19th would be a convenient date  for me to arrive.

At first I was kind of sad that I’d have to tell everyone that I wasn’t leaving in June, but actually July, but other then that I was like ‘YEAH BUDDY GOOD NEWS IS GOOD NEWS”

“NOW WHAT’S THE REST OF THE EMAIL SAY?”

“Nothing?”

“What about the school I’ll be going to?”

“How about my first host family?”

“Maybe the one and only other sheet that I need to apply for my visa?”

“How about information on what kind of visa I even need?”

“Not even what town I’ll be in?”

“Okay.”

“I guess they know what they’re doing.”

So then I looked up the airline prices for July.

I was not prepared for the prices.

Because I died.

After being brought back to life, I looked at the airline prices once more and promptly died again.

The prices DOUBLED.

Also, the tickets weren’t even for a year, and I HAVE to have a year-long ticket to even apply for a visa.

So that was kind of really depressing in almost every way.

The money that I have for the July ticket is about  -$2,500.

So I called Macho Man (remember him?)

Told him about the dilemma, and he said that he’d tell the Rotary Club in Australia the deal.

(FINGERS CROSSED)

I know that I’ll end up somewhere here:

auss

That’s the update.

So I might be leaving in July, but I also might be leaving in June.

Wow, that cleared up stuff.

Hey guys!

So, okay. I saw this really cool daily prompt.

Daily Prompt: Fast Forward

If you could fast forward to a specific date in the future, when would it be?

My initial thought was, well , that’s super duper easy!

I would fast forward to the day I arrive in Australia.

And then I let the draft sit for a couple days, and when I got back to it, I started thinking about it for a while.

 Fast forward to Australia?

Inner skeptical voice: Why?

Other inner voice: Well, Jessie I’m glad you asked because then I’d be in Australia.

Inner skeptical voice: You’re going to be in Australia already in less than half a year, and you want to fast forward to it?

Other inner voice: Uh yeah, duh.

Inner skeptical voice: But you won’t have any time to spend with your family at all for a whole year, and you want to leave even sooner?

Other inner voice: Well, it…

Inner skeptical voice: When you come back from Australia, you are going to be a senior in High school and it will be all: COLLEGE COLLEGE COLLEGE HOW DID MY ROOM GET DIRTY COLLEGE STUDY A.C.T. SCORES MOW THE LAWN I WANT A NAP CAN I JUST CURL UP AND COLOR SOMETHING COLLEGE COLLEGE WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE COLLEGE. OOH IS THAT A MUFFIN? COLLEGE CAREER A.C.T. A.C.T. A.C.T. SATURDAY CHORES YOU NEED MORE SLEEP I HAVE NO MONEY COLLEGE.

Other inner voice: Well, I never thought about that.

Inner skeptical voice: No you didn’t

Other inner voice: I have to appreciate every moment before Australia?

Inner skeptical voice: Not only before, but all the time afterwards too!

Other inner voice: Gosh, you are so smart.

Inner skeptical voice: I know *hair flip*

That’s basically how it went.

So right now, I kind of don’t want to fast forward to really any day besides Saturday, but then I would miss the science test, and I need to get a good grade on that, so that wouldn’t do any good. Plus I have to work on Friday.

So the answer to the daily prompt is today.

Or tomorrow, if you’re reading this tomorrow, but then tomorrow would be today, so then it would really mean the same thing but I’m talking about today, but I guess I could be flexible.

Till next time!
